Tuesday Bible Study Notes

Westside Care Center Tuesday, November 14, 2006

 Mr. C. Pat Lanyon

1B.1C. Introduction: "Be filled (1B.) with wisdom (1C.)" By doing What God says is His will:

Observations Session 5- second of 3 Direct Scriptural commands

"This is The Will of God"

1Th 5:18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

In the context of various duties of the Christian life, Paul the apostle includes the duty of a thankful spirit. The context is included to help us understand how thankfulness fits into the Christian life around other duties, and in relation to prayer and God’s will in our study of it for the Prayer Notebook.

1Thess 5: 1 But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you. 2 For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. 3 For when they say, "Peace and safety!" then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape.

4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. 5 You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. 6 Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. 8 But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation.

9 For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him. 11 Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing. 12 And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. Be at peace among yourselves.

14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all. 15 See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all. 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies. 21 Test all things; hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil.

Observations:

bulletThankfulness appears various times in the context of Prayer. A. In Adoration, prayer principle 1A., we are grateful for God’s works in our lives – adoring Him for what He does. B. In Colossians Paul commands a thankful spirit as part of God’s Will (Col 1:12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.) And again C. Here in 1 Thessalonians 5:18
bulletThankfulness is easy for things pleasant and pleasing in life, but showing thankfulness for the unpleasant and discouraging in life is NOT HUMAN, it is SUPERNATURAL! Thankfulness in the midst of serious loss or even death of loved ones is unexplainable apart for a supernatural control of or in life.
bulletThankfulness is possible BECAUSE it is done through Christ Jesus. With His testimony, it is much easier to have a thankful spirit since Jesus Himself lived with a peaceful and strong spirit in the midst of betrayal and death. Only a thankful spirit could cry out "Father forgive them for they know not what they do.!"
bulletGod teaches us about the Will: as in man who is created in the image of God.
bulletGod has given man an ability to think which He recognizes. Freedom of Man's will is recognized by God [Ge 4:6-10 De 5:29 1Ki 20:42 Isa 1:18-20 43:26 Jer 36:3,7 Joh 7:17]
bulletGod brings blessing upon man whenever he is obedient to God's commands. [Ex 15:26 19:5 20:6 23:22 Le 26:3-43 De 4:1,40 De 5:10,29 7:9,12-15 11:26-28 12:28 15:4,5 28:1-14 29:9 De 30:1-10,15-20 Jos 1:8 1Ki 2:3,4 3:14 8:23 9:3-9 1Ch 22:13 28:7,8 2Ch 7:17-22 26:5 27:6 30:9 31:10 Job 36:11 Pr 3:1 16:7 Isa 1:19 Jer 7:3-7,23 11:1-5 12:16 Jer 15:19-21 17:24-27 22:4,5,15,16 Zec 3:7 Mal 3:10-12 Mt 10:22 24:13 Mr 13:13 Col 1:22,23 Heb 3:6,14 6:11,12 10:36 Re 2:10]
bulletCHOICE – God gives 1)man the ability to make choices between judgments, and 2)sinner's make choices He disapproves. [1)Between judgments, by David 2Sa 24:12 1Ch 21:11-13 and 2)THE SINNER'S CHOICE De 30:19,20 Jos 24:15,18 1Ki 18:21]
bulletContingency (definition, 'possible event or occurrence, or result') -- God acts based upon what a man chooses and decides to do, and God’s reactions depends entirely on the act whether the man chose right or wrong. IN THE DIVINE GOVERNMENT OF MAN [Ge 2:16,17 3:3 4:7 18:19 Ex 19:5 Le 26:3-28 De 7:12-26 11:26-28 30:15,16,19 Jos 24:15 2Sa 24:12-14 1Ki 3:14 20:42 1Ch 28:7 2Ch 26:5 Job 36:11,12 Jer 11:4 Jer 12:17 18:8-10 22:4,5 Eze 33:14-16 Jon 3:10 Mt 19:17 Mt 23:37 26:39,42 Mr 11:26 Joh 9:41 14:23 15:6,7 Col 1:22,23 2Th 2:8-10 Heb 3:14 Re 2:22 3:3 22:17]
bulletThe Will of God is the Supreme Rule of Duty – It is man's responsibility to act on the wishes of God and to consider it more important than any other activity he could do. [Mt 6:10 12:50 26:39,42 Mr 3:35 14:36 Lu 11:2 22:42 Joh 4:34 5:30 6:38-40 Ac 18:21 Ro 12:2 15:32 1Co 4:19 16:7 Heb 6:3]
