The Fifth Absolute Attribute: UNIFIED God
DT 4.39; 6.4 5C. Unified (solitary, undivided)
Deuteronomy 4:39
Therefore know this day, and consider it in your heart, that the Lord
Himself is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other.
Deuteronomy 6:4
"Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one!
Other Key References:
Isaiah 44:6 Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and His redeemer [the
Messiah] the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside
me there is no God.
John 5.44 How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek
not the honour that cometh from God only? [the only God]
John 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only
true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
1 Corinthians 8.4 As concerning therefore the eating of those things that
are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the
world, and that there is none other God but one.
1 Timothy 1.17 Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only
wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
1 Timothy 6.15 -16 [15] Which in his times he shall shew, who is the
blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; [16] Who
only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach
unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power
everlasting. Amen.
Ephesians 4.5-6 [5] One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
[6] One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all,
and in you all.
Definition: Theissen tells us,
"By the unity of God we mean that there is but one God and that the
divine nature is undivided and indivisible.
(Thiessen, Henry C.; "LECTURES IN SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY"; Grand
Rapids: Wm. B. Eerdmans, 1949, p 134)
Why won't we ever have this unity? We are only one. God
is three and we speak of His unity in relation to this. We being only one cannot
have unity. Ex. 20:3_7, tells of the commands against idols. It does not stress
unity in word, however if these verses were followed there would be a worship of
one God _ a unity. (See also Deut. 4:35 35 Unto thee it was shewed, that thou
mightest know that the LORD he is God; there is none else beside him.)
source: thedericksons.com/d01350.htm
The unity of God lends credibility to the purpose of God. There is "one
purpose, one mind, one goal for all things." (Buswell, James Oliver;
"A SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY OF THE CHRISTIAN RELIGION"; Grand Rapids:
Zondervan, 1962, p 103)
Unity and the Trinity: God is represented in Scripture as one God
existing in 3 separate and distinct persons performing 3 distinct roles.
The Trinity is a very extensive concept to deal with. We mention here only 4
Scriptures that show all three as Trinity or as God.
Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing
them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the
Holy Ghost:
The Father is God: John 6:27 Labour not for the meat which
perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life,
which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the
Father sealed.
The Son Is God: Hebrews 1: 8 But unto the Son he saith, Thy
throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness
is the sceptre of thy kingdom.
The Spirit is God: Acts 5:3,4 [3] But Peter said, Ananias, why
hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and
to keep back part of the price of the land? [4] Whiles it
remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not
in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine
heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
Application:
Ps 133:1 A Song of degrees of David. Behold, how good and how pleasant it is
for brethren to dwell together in unity!
Eph 4:3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the
bond of peace.
Eph 4:13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the
knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature
of the fulness of Christ:
